Our athletes deserve more

For the third year running, government and the SA Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) have been lashed by various sectors of the media for the seemingly obvious flaws in the SA Sports Awards nominations process, and it's frustrating to witness when the answer to the problem is simple: all they have to do is remove themselves from the equation.

In its current format, nominations for the awards are made by the national federations that oversee the various sports codes and a judging panel appointed by the sports ministry and Sascoc elects the majority of the award winners, with the public voting for Sports Star of the Year.

But this process simply doesn’t work, with numerous deserving athletes being snubbed.
