Merseyside Derby’s quirky history

Legendary manager Bill Shankly once famously turned a truism about football on Merseyside into a barbed jibe at arch-rivals Everton by saying: "There are only two sides in Liverpool; Liverpool and Liverpool reserves."

In any other city of fiercely divided footbally loyalties across the globe, Shankly might have been accused of pushing the edge of the envelope, but the irrepressible Liverpudlian’s sense of humour kicked in and the Toffees took it on the jaw.

And why wouldn’t they? The clubs have remarkably close roots and both started out playing at Anfield.
