Police are hunting for an armed man who is believed to have brutally attacked a woman near the Gautrain Centurion station at the weekend.

Provincial police spokesperson Captain Tsekiso Mofokeng said a docket was opened on Tuesday, Rekord Centurion reported.

“The lady was attacked by a criminal with a knife as she was walking. We are investigating an armed robbery,” Mofokeng said.

It is reported that 53-year-old Joanne Atkins caught the Gautrain to Centurion on Saturday.

She decided to walk to Centurion Mall from the station when she came across a man in overalls on the streets and thought he was a municipal worker.

“He grabbed my handbag, but I put up a fight. And then he said in Afrikaans that he was going to stab me if I don’t give him my phone.”

The man allegedly stabbed her several times in the left arm and hand with a large multi-purpose knife.

Atkins was admitted into hospital and discharged on Sunday. Graphic images of the woman’s bloody wounds went viral on social media this week.

Meanwhile, Gautrain earlier this week said the attack on Atkins did not happen at their train station.

“I can confirm that the alleged attack making the rounds via social media did not happen at the Gautrain Centurion Station,” Gautrain spokesperson Kesagee Nayagere said.
