A police officer gunned down his wife and daughter in Hammanskraal on Wednesday morning.

He then committed suicide by turning the firearm on himself, said provincial police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubela.

This happened when the officer from Temba police station arrived home from work in the early hours of the morning, Rekord East reported.

“He shot his wife several times. He then shot their seven-year-old daughter before turning the gun on himself and shooting himself. He died at the scene,” Makhubela said.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the child died upon arriving at hospital.

“The 30-year-old mother was airlifted to a Johannesburg hospital with serious wounds.”

Makhubela said police were trying to establish what happened and the motive of the killings was still unclear.

“We are investigating an attempted murder, murder and an inquest,” Makhubela added.
