The National Assembly said that it was “appalled by false claims” that house chairperson for internal arrangements Thoko Didiza had died.
On the contrary, the Tshwane mayoral candidate was “alive and well at her Pretoria home”.
Last Friday, an online satirical blog falsely reported that police had confirmed that Didiza was stabbed to death at her Durban home while on holiday. Earlier another blog reported that she had escaped death after her car was shot at.
The article purporting to be reporting on the stabbing of Didiza by armed robbers even went so far as to claim that the police had confirmed Didiza’s death.
It claimed Didiza was stabbed in the upper body and attributed the murder to “her close pal”. It even said she was leaving behind five children.
According to a counter on the website, the article was shared at least 3 000 times on Facebook.
“Parliament urges all to exercise caution when reading these bogus online satirical blogs as they publish malicious information without any care to exercise the normal journalistic checks and balances of verifying information before it is published,” the National Assembly said.
