A Pretoria smash-and-grabber was shot and killed by his victim when he tried to rob a cellphone in Marabastad on Thursday morning.

His victim was parked on the corners of E’skia Mphahlele Drive and Boom Street when three armed men approached him. One of them was armed with a knife.

“I was sitting in the car and these guys came to me. One of them opened the door and got in the bakkie and tried to stab me. I shot him,” said the victim, who cannot be named.

The robber was shot in the chest. He tried to escape but fell to the floor and died outside Rudi’s Liquor Store. The victim’s iPhone 6 was taken.

Police spokesperson Captain Bonginkosi Msimango said two of the three robbers immediately fled, but one was caught in Marabastad.

“He was arrested and the third suspect is still at large. The cellphone was unfortunately not recovered.”

According to vagrants living in a nearby veld, the deceased, known as Clement, was a common thief from Atteridgeville.

An inquest and armed robbery with a knife is being investigated.
