An angry mob set a police van alight after officers confiscated liquor sold illegally in Hercules, Pretoria, on Friday afternoon.

This followed liquor operations at the Gomorrah informal settlement where a man was arrested for selling liquor without a licence, police spokesperson Captain Augustinah Selepe said.

She said that, while confiscating the liquor, residents overpowered the police officers and took one of the vehicle keys.

“The officers called for backup, as one vehicle was burnt and the other damaged by stone throwing,” Selepe said.

No injuries were reported and an arrest was still to be made.
