Two robbers were shot dead while their accomplice was arrested when a shoot-out ensued with police during a business robbery in Pretoria North yesterday, police spokesperson Captain Matthews Nkoadi said.

“They apparently went to rob a shop owner, who pressed the panic button. There was a shooting and the two accomplices were fatally wounded and died at the scene,” he said.

Three firearms with filed serial numbers, groceries and a getaway Toyota Quantum were recovered at the scene, Nkoadi said. Meanwhile, an 18-year-old boy will appear in the Moretele Magistrates’ Court today for allegedly murdering his grandfather in New Eersterust, Hammanskraal, last week.

The teenager was found hiding at the back of a pit toilet on Friday after his grandfather’s wife found the deceased lying on the floor in his house, already decomposed, police spokesperson Constable Herman Moremi said.

“The boy told police that he strangled his grandfather on Tuesday when they were fighting over a key to the gate,” Moremi said. Meanwhile, 281 people were arrested in the Tshwane north cluster following weekend crime operations, Nkoadi said.

“Crimes committed include murder, attempted murder, rape, drunk driving, possession of suspected stolen vehicles, public drinking and road traffic offences, public violence and shop lifting.”
