A six-year-old boy was shot in the shoulder on Sunday when a stray bullet struck him at a shopping centre in Centurion.

The child was sitting in the back seat of a car when paramedics found him with a gunshot wound to his right shoulder, ER24 spokesperson Werner Vermaak said.

Vermaak said the circumstances around the incident were unknown, however, it was understood the bullet strayed from a shootout nearby.

“Bystanders on the scene explained that the shooting incident occurred between security guards and robbers during an alleged robbery. One of the stray bullets went into the vehicle and into the child’s shoulder,” he said.

According to the bystanders, the parents returned to the car to find it surrounded by the public, Vermaak said.

“At this stage, it is not clear if the child was left in the car unattended at the time when he sustained the injury.”
