The accused, Simon Maluleka, assaulted his girlfriend at his home in Temba, near Pretoria in May 2010, Rekord North reported.
“His girlfriend was taken to the Jubilee hospital with injuries and died a few days later,” said Constable Herman Moremi said.
Maluleka was initially charged with assault with the intention to do grievous bodily harm but was later charged with murder after the 34-year-old woman died.
During the sentencing the court also declared that he was unfit to possess a firearm.
Earlier this month, a taxi driver found guilty of killing his girlfriend and her mother was sentenced to 25 years in jail by the Rustenburg Magistrate’s Court.
The man, Seuntjie David Nakedi, allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend Tshepiso Moilwe, and her mother Annah Moilwe, at their home in Lethabong on March 15, 2013.
During the trial, Nakedi told the court that the two women were shot accidentally.
