The unidentified teacher was marking Mechanical Technology papers at a Grade 12 marking centre when he collapsed and died on Wednesday, Centurion Rekord reported.

Gauteng MEC of Education Panyaza Lesufi said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened to hear of the death of one of our own, who has been described as a valued and respected educator by his peers.”

Lesufi expressed his deepest condolences to the family and said a team of officials will be sent to the family.

“We hope that the family will find comfort in the knowledge that we too share their loss and regard it as a huge blow to education in Gauteng and the country at large,” said Lesufi.

In a separate incident, a Gauteng teacher at Hoërskool Birchleigh in Kempton Park died in front of her class a day before her birthday in August.

A close family member said Ebeth de Coning had been writing something on the board when she suddenly stopped and complained that she was not feeling well.

It was alleged that De Coning, who had been in the teaching profession for 30 years, suffered a heart attack.
