It was believed the mother had been holding her baby when the father allegedly had pushed her to the ground, resulting in her falling on top of the baby, Rekord Moot reported.

Best Care Ambulance spokesperson Xander Loubser said the baby had sustained facial and head trauma after he and his mother were allegedly assaulted by the father on Saturday morning

Loubser added a member of the community had come running to him with the crying baby boy in her arms.

“I took the baby from her and did an assessment. The baby was alert and crying, and I didn’t notice any critical injuries on his body,” said Loubser.

“I transported the baby to Eugene Marais Hospital,” added Loubser.

Loubser urged women to report domestic violence cases.

“I advise women and children not to tolerate abuse, and they should seek help if they are victims,” said Loubser.

In a separate incident, a 50-year-old man appeared in the Durban Magistrates’ Court for the alleged sexual abuse of the 3-year-old daughter of a family friend in October last year.

It was alleged the men had returned from a night out at a local shebeen and continued drinking in the room in which the toddler was playing.

According to the mother, her traumatised daughter approached her later in the evening and told her the man had sexually assaulted her while her father and uncle were asleep.

The mother’s whereabouts during the incident were unknown.
