Stanger Hospital management have apologised to Dennis Byrne and his fiancé, Anna Victor for the poor treatment Byrne had received while in their care.
Byrne, with a broken hip, was left to defecate in his bath towel because he did not receive assistance using his bed pan.
A Stanger Hospital official picked Victor up at her home in Mandeni to take her to the hospital where she was received in the boardroom and formally apologised to by the hospital CEO, the public relations officer and the matron.
She said they promised to improve their service and to follow disciplinary steps against those responsible for Byrne’s care.
Victor said Byrne has since been moved to another ward and there has been a marked improvement in the treatment he receives.
She said his hip was operated on last Thursday and the surgery was a success.
“I did not do this for myself, but for everybody out there who has to go to government hospitals,” said Victor, expressing her gratitude for the outcome of the story.
The KZN department of health was once again approached for comment but they failed in providing any by deadline.
