Five tips for healthy air travel
These simple practices will help minimise your risk of getting sick on a plane.
Air travel has always come with health risks, but COVID-19 has made it more important than ever to practice good hygiene on a flight – for your sake and that of fellow passengers.
Here is a reminder of what to do…
- Stay hydrated – Because of the oxygen-thin air and lack of humidity in the sky, it’s common to experience dehydration on a flight, which can lead to headaches and exacerbate jetlag. The solution: sip on water throughout your journey and try to avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Keep eye drops and nose spray handy too.
- Wash your hands regularly – It sounds obvious but is vitally important to avoid germs spreading. Wash your hands (for at least 20 seconds) before a flight and at regular intervals during the journey too (it’s a good excuse to get up and stretch your legs – see below!). Alternatively, use hand sanitizer.
- Wear a mask – Like them or loathe them, masks are non-negotiable now, especially when sitting in a confined space near to others. Make sure your mask is clean, comfortable and breathable – you want to avoid touching your eyes and face as much as possible – and always keep a spare.
- Wipe down communal surfaces – While airlines are taking extra precautions at present, it’s still a good idea to wipe down your table tray and belt buckle. Carry antibacterial wipes for this purpose. Some health experts also advise booking a window seat as you’re less exposed to other people (walking up and down the passage) that way…
- Flex your muscles – Regular movement is important, particularly on long flights, to reduce your risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Get up and walk or perform simple stretches in your chair: move your head from side to side, circle your neck, raise your arms above your head, flex your toes, rotate your ankles, and so on. Your airline will provide exercise suggestions along with other safety information.
