How to create a cosy home in seven steps

Bring in warm, cosy snugness and turn your home into the toastiest place to be this winter with these easy, practical and affordable ideas from Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty.

Layers, layers, layers

Think fleecy throws, wooly blankers, extra soft, faux fur cushions. Layer up on these snug items to create a comfy, cosy space perfect to cuddle up in front of a movie with the whole family. Opt for warm colours such as burnt orange or forest greens and remember to add a pretty basket next to the couch where you can store throws and blankets neatly while having them in close reach should you need another layer.

Roll out the rugs

Besides adding warmth to your room, rugs are also a stylish addition to your living space. Add some to your lounge, your entrance and definitely next to your bed so that your feet land on a warm rug instead of a cold floor first thing in the morning. Choose textured materials with thicker weaves and vibrant colours for extra warmth and charm.

Swap out your curtains

Curtains contribute to the retention of heat in the home. So, when the nights start to get chilly, replace your lighter summer curtains with heavier drapes to ensure warm, cosy evenings.

Soften the lighting

Add a few candles and buy a table or standing lamp for softer evening lighting. And if you have non-flashing fairy lights with plain bulbs, string those up to add to the ambience – they’re definitely not just for Christmas.

Go gas

Gas heaters are a great investment as they really heat up smaller areas quite quickly and they can also be moved from room to room. And, with loadshedding a regular feature of our lives, they offer both heat and light.

Cover up in winter bedding

While summer is all about crisp, lightweight bedding, winter calls for cotton flannel, velvet flannel or heavyweight Egyptian cotton sheets.

Bulk up your towels

Stepping out of the shower on a cold day is so much nicer when you can wrap yourself in a large fluffy towel to warm up and dry off. A new, plush set of towels will not only keep you warm, but also make the prospect of getting up while it’s still dark out a whole lot more palatable. If your budget allows it, invest in a heated towel rail for a touch of luxury.
