Parkhill Secondary School relaunches its library

The school has also set about starting a book club to foster a love for reading.

THERE is much excitement around the corridors of Parkhill Secondary School as they have relaunched a school library.

The library, which was largely defunct for a number of years, has reopened after donations from various role-players, fellow schools in the area and the support of learners and staff.

Head of the Department of Languages and an educator at the school, Kanchan Maharaj, welcomed the relaunch of the library.

“I’ve been teaching at the school for close to two decades. When I started teaching, the school had a fully functional library, however, at the time, our curriculum didn’t allow for a library as a period for learners to utilise. As a result, the library very slowly but surely became defunct. We removed the books that we did have and used the library as a classroom.

“Recently, our bursar and a fellow educator decided to revitalise and prepare for the relaunch of the library. Thanks to generous sponsorships, we were able to secure bookshelves, and we also utilised boards from an old Blockbusters to form the backing of some of our genres.

“Part of this decision was to revitalise and foster a love for reading which we feel would have a ripple effect. The decision was also important because book reviews are a necessity for learners studying English,” she said.

Maharaj added that the school was now in the process of finalising a book club.

“We are so pleased that our book club is up and running. We’d also like to thank Al-Baraka Bank for the donations of books and to our fellow schools, Duffs Road Primary School, Charles Hugo Primary School and Danville Park Girls’ High School, who also donated. I must also commend the staff and learners who donated books to our library,” she said.
