Tips from Beagle Watch Armed Response

BE PREPARED. BE SAFE.

We have had a number of recent incidents where suspects have locked their victims in the bathroom or other rooms in the home.

Beagle Watch Armed Response suggests that you keep panic buttons hidden in all rooms – especially the bathroom, as this seems to be the room of choice for criminals.
Keep a spare key of the room hidden somewhere, together with a pin or device that can be used to push the key from the lock.
Beagle Watch offers a water-resistant, wireless panic button that can be mounted in an unobtrusive spot in any room, including the bathroom.

Wheelie bin, how criminals love thee!

Criminals love wheelie bins. When left outside, they offer height to scale walls, can serve as a hiding place, and provide information on what you may have bought, such as high-value items.
Only put your bin out on the morning of collection day and bring it back in and out of sight as soon as the garbage has been collected.
Be aware of your surroundings when taking out and bringing in the bin.
If you are not at home, arrange with someone to bring in your wheelie bin after the garbage has been collected.

Walking or jogging? Please leave your valuables at home

Muggings and robberies of runners and joggers are on the increase everywhere – especially in greenbelt areas and parks.
If possible, always walk or run with a group or a dog.
Be aware of your environment at all times.
Never walk or run with earphones.
Leave your phone at home.
Take off all jewellery and rings (criminals have been known to bite rings off fingers).
If possible, take along pepper spray.
Tell someone when to expect you back and the route you will be taking.

BE PREPARED. BE SAFE.

Always check before opening the gate

Always check who is outside your gate before opening.
This is especially important when expecting visitors or delivery.
Even if you have an intercom system at your gate, it is always safer to either check on your CCTV cameras (if you have) or go outside to make sure you don’t have any unwanted visitors before opening the gate.
Always carry a panic button with you when welcoming or seeing out visitors.
Brief domestic staff, tenants and family members on this important safety measure.

Courier vehicles are targets

Criminals are not only robbing courier vehicles, but are also pretending to be couriers to gain entry into properties.
Be extra cautious and vigilant when accepting home deliveries and always verify the identity of the courier company or delivery vehicle.
Always take a panic button with you when going outside.
If possible, let the courier vehicle drive into your property so that you can safely take delivery of your parcels.
Try to minimise the number of deliveries at your home.

In the unfortunate event of a home invasion, try to remain as calm and as quiet as possible.
Do not resist and do not make eye contact with the intruders.
If possible, raise a silent panic activation with your security provider.
Give the criminals what they want. Your possessions can be replaced, but lives cannot.
If you have a safe, hand over the code or the keys.
Develop an emergency plan of action with your family and domestic staff.

BE PREPARED. BE SAFE.

Secure your gate

Your motor or pedestrian gates are some of the most vulnerable areas of your property.
Criminals often lift gates off their rails or force open pedestrian gates to gain access.
Take the necessary precautions to ensure that your gate cannot be lifted off its rail, that your gate motor is secured, and pedestrian gates are locked.
When entering or exiting your property, check that the gate is closed securely.
Gardeners should always keep the gate closed, even when working outside the perimeter.
Be prepared. Will you know if your gate is open or has been tampered with? Ask us about the Beagle Watch Gate Guardian and add an affordable and highly effective additional layer to your home security.

BE PREPARED. BE SAFE.

Is your house an easy target for criminals?

Criminals generally do their homework well before targeting a house. Is your property appealing to a criminal? Beagle Watch offers tips to make it less attractive to criminals.
Ensure you have adequate outside lighting to eliminate dark corners in your garden at night.
Cut back any shrubs or bushes that can serve as hiding areas.
Keep wheelie bins, ladders and objects that can be used to climb over or up walls out of sight and locked away.
Keep your garden shed locked and do not leave any tools lying around.
Ensure the boards of your security provider are up to date. Boards of companies that no longer exist are a dead giveaway that you may not have the protection of a security provider.

Dog poisonings are unfortunately on the rise again

If you suspect that your dog has ingested poison, act immediately.
Look out for disorientation, vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive salivation and coughing up slime, hyperventilation or difficulty breathing, convulsions and seizures, abnormal pupils, tremors and muscle twitching or paralysis.
Keep the details of your emergency vet on hand and discuss an action plan with your family and staff.
Before letting your dogs out, check the yard for possible poison. If you do find something that seems suspicious, do not pick it up with your bare hands.
Restrict your dogs’ access to the street front.
Beagle Watch has invested in Dog Poisoning Rescue Kits. If you suspect that your dog has been poisoned, phone our Call Centre immediately on (011) 678 1972.

BE PREPARED. BE SAFE.

Do not compromise your safety during loadshedding

Load shedding and power cuts wreak havoc with back-up batteries for alarm systems.
An alarm battery should last one to two years and needs approximately 24 hours to charge fully.
With power cuts and load shedding, batteries start to run low (or flat) and do not have sufficient time to recharge fully before the next power cut.
This leads to battery cells dying and the battery lasts for shorter and shorter periods, leaving you more and more vulnerable at the times you most need protection.
An alarm battery should last three to four hours. If it does not, it is time for a replacement.
To ensure your safety, Beagle Watch offers replacement batteries at cost. Phone our Call Centre or email orders@co.za

Moving house? Don’t drop your guard on security

Clients are often tempted to cancel their home insurance and private security when they receive the good news that their home has been sold. However, do not make any hasty decisions.

Do not cancel your home insurance and private security before all the official paperwork and final transfers have been completed. As the owner, you are still responsible for the property and would be liable for the cost of any accidental or other damages.
Do not advertise that your house has been sold. If possible, limit the time that the “sold” sign is displayed.
When cleaning out or buying new equipment, be aware of what the contents of your wheelie bin or boxes on the pavement could reveal to potential criminals.
Advise us of your move date so that we can schedule additional patrols and a standby vehicle.

Screen domestic staff and contractors before hiring

Employing domestic staff or contractors without a thorough background check could compromise your security. Beagle Watch suggests the following simple steps to ensure your safety.

Ask the SAPS to conduct a background check using fingerprints. This is called a police clearance and comes at a minimal cost. The candidate will be required to be present at the police station together with their identity document.
Check with previous employers going back at least 3 years.
Ensure you have a file copy of all identification documentation, full contact details (residence and, if a migrant, details of the home address) as well as Next of Kin information.
Ask Beagle Watch to assist with pre-employment screening.

Do not become a victim of a traffic light robbery

Motorists are often targeted at traffic lights and intersections. We offer tips to stay safe on the road.

Always keep all your windows closed and doors locked, especially at traffic lights, intersections, or in slow-moving traffic.
Do not leave any valuables on display.
Always be fully aware of your surroundings and any pedestrians around you.
Do not be distracted by the radio, music, or fellow passengers.
While it is not only against the law to use your mobile phone when driving, it also poses an additional safety risk when waiting at a traffic light or in congested traffic.
Avoid high-risk areas, especially at night.

YOUR ELECTRIC FENCE IS CRUCIAL TO YOUR SAFETY.

It is important to ensure that your electric fence works optimally to keep intruders out.
Regularly check your electric fence and cut back foliage and shrubbery that could interfere with the fence.
Are the strands of your electric fence secure, or can they be pushed out of place or apart so that an individual can squeeze through undetected? Having line loops or earth loops installed is a quick and cost-effective way of preventing this.

Secure your outdoor beams

Theft of outdoor beams is a rising crime trend.
Criminals could be selling them for cash or could be trying to disarm properties, just to strike at a later stage.
Install outdoor passives so that they cover each other in the field of range of the detector, or install microwave detectors to detect heat change and movement. (The latter option will be available soon.)
Ensure that beams are fitted with a TAMPER ZONE. This will ensure that the beams will trigger an alarm when they are tampered with, whether the alarm is activated or not.
Activate your alarm and beams whenever you can, even when you are at home during the day, but especially at night.

Equipping your domestic staff to handle an emergency

Domestic staff are often the caretakers of our homes and children during the day.
Ensuring they are adequately trained and equipped to deal with an emergency is therefore vital.
Do your staff have the number of your security provider on their phone?
Are they equipped with panic buttons?
Do they know who to contact in case of a medical or fire emergency?
Are they trained in safety around the pool or basic first aid?

Be safety-conscious when dropping off or fetching children

  • Parents and carers are often distracted when dropping off or collecting children at school and can easily fall victim to street robberies and other criminal activity, warns Beagle Watch Armed Response.
  • Do not be distracted by text messages or emails on your phone while waiting to drop off or fetch children at school or other gatherings.
  • Keep your cell phone and other valuables out of sight, and your vehicle’s windows closed and the doors locked.
  • Be aware of your surroundings, pedestrians and other vehicles.
  • Keep 011 678 1972, the Beagle Watch 24-hour Call Centre number, on speed dial.

  • As a Beagle Watch client, you are able to use our mobile application to update the new code on our system, or you can do so by contacting our 24-hour Call Centre on (011) 678 1972.
  • Please be assured that your code is only shared with the Beagle Watch Response Officer in case of an alarm activation or emergency.
  • Please clean the keypad buttons regularly to prevent a build-up of dirt and resultant potential identification of the code numbers.
  • If you have a wireless keypad, please remember to change the batteries every year.

Ensure the effectiveness of your outdoor beams

Outdoor beams are an excellent additional security layer (if applied correctly) to alert you to a possible intruder on your property.

What to look out for

  • Beams need to be checked regularly to ensure they are in good working order.
  • Pets can activate the beams, causing false alarms.
  • Beams are usually installed 1.2 m from the ground, so if criminals are aware that there are beams installed, they can avoid detection by crawling under the beam.

What you can do

  • Investigate the use of newer generation beams that are pet-friendly.
  • Consider double stacking beams that are installed at both chest height and knee height, ensuring intruders don’t go undetected.
  • Install movement-activated lighting around the perimeter of your home.

Keep gates, garages and cars locked

There have been a number of recent incidents of theft out of motor vehicles that were either parked in the garage or under a carport. Beagle Watch therefore cautions the public to keep garages and motor vehicles locked at all times.

  • Criminals know that garages are usually not linked to alarm systems and contain valuable items and tools that can be utilised in break-ins and other criminal activities.
  • If there is an unlocked vehicle with sunglasses, wallets and other valuables for the taking, it is a bonus for criminals.
  • The same holds true for toolsheds. Keep your toolshed secured and locked at all times. This is not only to prevent theft, but also for the safety of children and other members of the family.

Load shedding highlights the importance of back-up batteries

With Stage 3 and 4 load shedding now a reality, good-quality back-up batteries for alarm systems are vital.

The back-up battery for your alarm system should last at least four hours. If it doesn’t, it is time to replace it. This is critical to ensure your continued safety during power cuts. Continuous power cuts also damage the cells of back-up batteries, so they need to be replaced more often.

Be prepared for load shedding, check the status of your back-up batteries and replace them timeously.
Beagle Watch offers highly affordable back-up battery options to clients and non-clients.

Be safe when accepting parcels at home

Fake deliveries are on the rise. Criminals pretend to be delivering a parcel from a retailer or online shopping portal, gain entry into the home, and then help themselves to high-value items.

Brief domestic workers and family members not to let any delivery person or vehicle onto the property without first checking with you.

If you are expecting a delivery, ensure you have received a confirmation email or text message with the details of the driver and the delivery time. If not, first check with the retailer or online seller.

Do not accept the delivery if you have any doubts. The criminals are well-prepared: they often have the home owner’s details and can wear branded clothing.

  • At night, ensure all windows and doors are locked.
  • Close curtains or blinds and move cell phones, laptops, and jewellery out of sight and away from windows and doors.

Wheelie bin safety

  • When taking out or bringing in your wheelie bin, please be aware of your surroundings and first check that all is clear before opening the gate.

  • Only put your bin out on the morning of collection day and bring it back in and out of sight as soon as the garbage has been collected.
  • A wheelie bin that is left outside for a few days can signal to criminals that you are not at home. Arrange with someone to bring in the bin after if you are not at home.

  • Not only is gate motor theft a very common occurrence, but it also poses a safety risk, as criminals are then able to gain access to your property.
  • Ensure that your gate motor is secured with an anti-theft bracket.
  • If possible, also install a gate alarm. A gate alarm will ensure that your security provider is notified immediately when your gate is left open for longer than a certain time or when tampering is suspected.
  • Will you know if your gate is open or has been tampered with? Ask us about the Beagle Watch Gate Guardian and add an affordable and highly effective additional layer to your home security.

  • When lighting a wood fire, use firelighters – never petrol or paraffin.
  • Ensure you are far enough from flammable materials and have a fire extinguisher or hosepipe nearby.
  • Never leave children (or pets) unattended near an open fire.
  • Don’t put warm ashes straight into your bin – even if it is only slightly hot it can still melt the plastic and cause a fire or damage.

Personal safety

    • Ensure your electric fence is on and that your gate is closed and entrances are as secure as possible.
    • Keep a panic button nearby or wear a Beagle Watch Panic Bracelet.
    • If you have a braai at night, ensure that your garden is well lit, especially where intruders may hide.

Why you should consider adding security cameras to your home security armour

Security cameras in and around the home are no longer a luxury – they are a necessity to ensure your family’s safety, according to security experts, Beagle Watch.

  • Cameras help to deter criminals. CCTV cameras are an effective deterrent but do not try bluff with ‘fake’ cameras, as seasoned criminals typically spot them from afar.
  • In most cases, criminals will target the property that seemingly offers the least resistance. If they spot CCTV cameras linked to armed response, they will most likely find another target.
  • Should you become the victim of a burglary or robbery, the cameras will record the incident and can aid the investigation.
  • Your CCTV system can be added to your smartphone(s) so that you are always connected, even when not at home.

If you add Beagle Watch’s Video Verification service to your CCTV cameras, our Call Centre will be able to immediately see which zone has been compromised and give valuable input to the Response Officer, saving precious seconds.

  • Please ensure that gates and garage doors are locked and windows are closed at night.
  • Do not leave wallets, cash, laptops and other valuable items in cars.
  • Do not leave tools, bicycles or other items outside.

Is your security system holiday ready?

Did you know that your alarm system needs regular servicing? And that your home security systems need regular checking?

Alarm and security systems work continuously and are put under additional stress with repeated incidences of loadshedding and power cuts.

They therefore need regular servicing to ensure all the components are in perfect working order, and for the continued safety and security of your loved ones.

The Beagle Watch Technical Department offers a 13-point Holiday Check to give your entire home security system a diagnostic check and to ensure everything is holiday and Silly Season ready.

The 13-point check covers a full inspection of the alarm system wireless devices, fence and gate motor, remotes, panic buttons, PIRs and outdoor passives, wiring and gate access, as well as updating security codes.

Make sure your vehicles are safe

Criminals are not only stealing motor vehicles, or breaking into vehicles to help themselves to valuable items, but they are now turning to stealing the wheels off vehicles parked inside clients’ premises. Bakkies and SUVs are particular favourites.

  • Keep vehicles locked at all times.
  • Park vehicles in a locked garage at night, and lock the vehicle to activate the alarm.
  • If vehicles are parked inside the premises, try to keep them out of sight from the street.
  • Owners of SUVs and bakkies should consider investing in wheel lock nuts as a preventative measure.
  • Check that your home security systems, such as beams and electric fencing, are in working order and activated.

Fire safety tips

Beagle Watch has announced that the company is now paying a monthly subscription to FIRE OPS SA on behalf of every Beagle Watch client for priority access to professional firefighters in the case of a home fire or other fire-related emergency. This follows the increased number of devastating home fires in our footprint over recent months.

A fire can start quicker than one realises and can engulf an entire house in minutes. There are, however, a few basic precautions you can take to prevent tragedy.

  • Make sure not to overload any electric circuits.
  • Inspect your light fittings and make sure that electric bulbs work properly.
  • Only use electrical cords and bulbs rated for outdoor use.
  • Check sockets for damages that may trigger a fire.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher within reach.
  • Have an escape route and emergency plan in case of fire.

Now is the time to check your security systems

The start of the new year is also an opportune time to check your security systems.

“A security alarm system or smoke detector are only worthwhile if they are in good working order, so it is important that they are checked regularly,” says André Aiton, MD of Beagle Watch Armed Response.

“It is no use having a panic button if the batteries are flat or a smoke alarm that doesn’t trigger during a fire. Ensuring that these elements are in working order is vital to the safety of the home and its occupants and they should be checked and tested regularly,” cautions Aiton.

“Contact your security company if you are unsure on how to test your security system so that it can work for you in case of need,” urges Aiton.

Keep your valuables out of sight

When out shopping, walking, jogging or in a restaurant or a coffee shop, keep your mobile phone out of sight. This is the advice from Beagle Watch Armed Response, Managing Director, André Aiton.

  • Muggings, common robberies and cell phone theft are a reality.
  • Do not walk and talk on your phone – phones are snatched from pedestrians daily.
  • When in a restaurant, keep your phone out of sight – not on the table.
  • Install passwords to lock the phone in case of theft.
  • Kindly caution domestic staff to be alert and extra careful.
  • Do not leave valuables in your vehicle anywhere – even when your vehicle is parked in your driveway.

Preparing children for a fire emergency

It is estimated that burn injuries claim approximately 1 300 young lives each year. Teaching children fire safety tips is therefore crucial. Beagle Watch offers a few basic safety tips.

  • Teach children how to prevent and survive a fire.
  • Explain why fire safety is important and that fire is a tool, not a toy.
  • Install a smoke alarms and check them regularly. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do if they hear them.
  • Practice fire drills, and include the children in these drills.
  • Show children how they should evacuate from a room filled with smoke by crawling along the floor to the nearest exit.
  • Teach children to STOP-DROP-and-ROLL if their clothes catch on fire.
  • If you are a Beagle Watch client, teach your children to phone the Beagle Watch Call Centre for assistance or activate the fire alert on the Beagle Watch Smart App, as Beagle Watch clients enjoy priority access to FIRE OPS SA in the case of a fire-related emergency.

Keep driveway and pedestrian gates closed, always

Driveway or access gates are the most vulnerable point on any property, with more than 85% of residential contact crimes starting at the gate. Ensuring your gate is closed and locked at all times is therefore vital to your personal and home security, is the advice of André Aiton, Managing Director of Beagle Watch Armed Response.

  • When entering or exiting your gate, wait before driving off to check that the gate has closed properly and that nobody has followed you inside (or snuck in while you were driving out).
  • Cut back shrubs and trees that might obscure your view when driving or walking in or out the driveway.
  • Consider automating your driveway gate so that it closes automatically.
  • Install a gate alarm that will notify your security company when the gate is left open or being forced open or tampered with.
  • Ask Beagle Watch about their effective and cost-efficient solution called the GATE GUARDIAN.

  • Avoid carrying cash. Pay for purchases with a credit or debit card if possible.
  • Be extra careful if you carry a wallet, handbag or backpack – they are easy to snatch.
  • Beware of strangers approaching you for any reason. Con artists try various methods of distracting you with the intention of taking your money or belongings.

Protect yourself from vehicle crime

Beagle Watch Armed Response has noted an increase in vehicle crime in certain parts of its footprint. The company offers the following safety tips.

  • Take responsibility for your vehicle and personal belongings inside it.
  • Park only where it’s safe: Do not park in dimly lit areas and always park inside the premises (whether at home, at work, or when visiting friends or family).
  • Do not leave any valuables visible in your vehicle. Laptops, phones, handbags and briefcases should always be removed.
  • Check, and check again. Vehicle jamming is a reality. When you lock your car, check that it is in fact locked. A car will not signal that it is locking if there is a signal jammer, but it doesn’t hurt to test the door handle and check.
  • Consider adding additional security measures, such as a motion sensor, smash-and-grab film or a signal scanner protector to your list of vehicle security systems.

Mobile phones, the opportunistic criminal’s favourite.

To avoid falling prey to opportunistic criminals, keep mobile phones out of sight when out and about and in the car.

  • If you are walking and talking on your phone, or reading and answering text messages on the go, you are distracted and become the perfect opportunity for a mobile phone snatcher.
  • Smash and grab robberies are common and can happen any time of the day – or night.
  • Talking on your phone (without a hands-free device) or texting while driving is not only poor driving practice – and against the law – it also creates the perfect opportunity for criminals.
  • Keep your phone out of sight until you have safely reached your destination.

Don’t give criminals tools to access your premises

  • Criminals love wheelie bins, stepladders and garden tools.

  • Ladders left out in the garden are handy for getting to an open window, while cutters and other implements can be used to force open security gates, doors or knock out a window.
  • Only take your wheelie bin outside on the morning of collection day and keep it inside the yard and out of sight the rest of the time.
  • Store tools and other equipment in a locked shed or locked garage.

How power cuts affect alarm system batteries

Load shedding and power cuts wreak havoc with back-up batteries for alarm systems, warns Beagle Watch Armed Response,

  • An alarm battery should last one to two years and needs approximately 24 hours to charge fully.
  • With power cuts and load shedding, batteries start to run low (or flat) and do not have sufficient time to recharge fully before the next power cut.
  • This leads to battery cells dying and the battery lasts for shorter and shorter periods, leaving you more and more vulnerable at the times you most need protection.
  • An alarm battery should last at least three to four hours. If it does not, it is time for a replacement.
  • To ensure your safety, Beagle Watch offers replacement batteries at cost for clients and non-clients. Phone our Call Centre or email orders@beaglewatch.co.za.

  • Ensure that your gate motor is secured with an anti-theft bracket.
  • If possible, also install a gate alarm. A gate alarm will ensure that your security provider is notified immediately when your gate is left open for longer than a certain time or when tampering is suspected.

Keep gates, garages, cars and sheds locked

Vehicles parked inside premises or under carports can be targets for opportunistic criminals. Beagle Watch, therefore, cautions the public to be extra vigilant.

    • Keep vehicles parked outside or under carports locked at all times and remove any valuable items.
    • Lock vehicles parked in garages. Criminals know that garages are usually not linked to alarm systems and may contain valuable items and tools that can be utilised in break-ins and other criminal activities.
    • The same holds true for tool sheds. Keep your tool shed secured and locked at all times. This is not only to prevent theft but also for the safety of children and other family members.

Make sure you are not being followed from the mall

Beagle Watch has warned of a growing trend of female victims being followed home from shopping centres.

“Criminals target women driving alone and wait for them to leave the shopping centre knowing that they probably reside in the area,” says André Aiton, Managing Director of Beagle Watch.

“They know the victim is a soft target and vulnerable once she arrives home and take full advantage of this situation. “Their main aim is often not the victim – or her car – but rather gaining easy access into the property, where they can help themselves to more valuables,” says Aiton.

Please be aware of your surroundings at all times when exiting a mall or retail node. Continually check that you are not being followed and only enter your driveway when you are sure it is safe to do so. If in doubt, phone the Beagle Watch 24-hour Call Centre on (011) 678 1972.

Pets and fire safety

Our pets are curious creatures especially around candles, heaters, open fires and stovetops. It is therefore important to take extra safety precautions and fireproof your home and safeguard your pets.

This is especially important in the current dry Highveld Winter conditions and with the repeated power outages.

Be extra cautious with open flames

  • A candle on your coffee table may be safe around humans, but it does not take much for your excited dog or your curious cat to accidentally knock it over. Consider battery-operated, flameless candles. They can look and smell like real candles and are more pet-friendly.
  • Always place a safety screen in front of a fireplace and keep it in place.
  • Have a “pet-free zone” of at least a metre away from the fireplace.
  • Never leave pets (and children) unattended with open flames, gas heaters or an open fireplace.

Beware of chewers

  • If you know your dog or cat likes to chew on things in your home, please hide loose wires.
  • Kitchen appliances, hairdryers (or irons) and other electronic equipment can cause fires when disturbed by a pet.
  • Be mindful of their placement and do turn them off and unplug them when they are not in use.

Be prepared

Since pets are often home alone during the day, the best way to protect them is by installing smoke detectors that are connected to our Call Centre.

Alarm batteries 101

The most important aspect of any alarm system is a properly functioning, high-quality back-up battery. “A low or failing battery is a security risk that can have serious consequences in the case of an emergency,” warns Beagle Watch MD, André Aiton.

How long should alarm batteries last? And what happens during power cuts?

  • An alarm battery should last between one and two years and needs approximately 24 hours to charge fully.
  • Unfortunately, with power cuts and loadshedding, batteries start to run low (or flat) and do not have sufficient time to recharge fully before the next power cut.
  • This then leads to battery cells dying and the battery lasts for shorter and shorter periods.
  • This leaves you more vulnerable when you most need protection.
  • An alarm battery should easily last four hours. If it does not, it is time for a replacement.

Security cameras in and around the home are no longer a luxury – they are a necessity to ensure your family’s safety, according to security experts, Beagle Watch.

  • Cameras help to deter criminals. CCTV cameras are an effective deterrent, but do not try to bluff with ‘fake’ cameras, as seasoned criminals typically spot them from afar.
  • In most cases, criminals will target the property that seemingly offers the least resistance. If they spot CCTV cameras linked to armed response, they will most likely find another target.
  • Should you become the victim of a burglary or robbery, the cameras will record the incident and can aid the investigation.
  • Your CCTV system can be added to your smart phone(s) so that you are always connected, even when not at home.

Why reporting all incidents to the SAPS is important

Please report all criminal incidents – even petty and ‘opportunistic’ crimes – to the SAPS so that cases can be opened, is the advice from security experts Beagle Watch Armed Response.

Apart from assisting with accurate statistics and future planning around crime trends, it also assists private security companies and the Police when suspects are apprehended.

“If a suspect is caught for stealing something small from a property, it usually goes unnoticed and gets classed as an opportunistic crime,” says Cobus Botes, Area Manager for Beagle Watch. “However, if the same suspect is arrested and it can be shown that he was arrested on numerous previous occasions for similar petty crimes, he will be identified as a repeat offender and prosecution will be done more successfully.”

With no previous case numbers, the suspect is likely to be back on the streets in no time.

It’s Springtime! And time to spring clean your home security

According to Beagle Watch Armed Response, crime levels start to increase towards the end of the year and peak around the Festive Season. With the mid-December holiday season just 100 days away, now is the perfect time to re-evaluate your home security.

  • Criminals are very adept at changing their tactics to circumvent traditional home security measures. It is therefore important to regularly update your security systems.
  • Clients often only improve their home security after they have become a victim of crime. Beagle Watch strongly advises to implement as many preventative measures as possible to help avert a home invasion or an armed robbery.
  • Improving your home security does not have to be expensive. Beagle Watch has many affordable products that add tremendous value and the team of security experts will also offer practical hints and tips to improve safety around your property.

Keep your driveway safe

Ensuring your safety when entering or exiting your property when driving or on foot is vital and does not have to be costly to be effective. Beagle Watch offers a few basic safety tips.

  • Cut back any trees and shrubs that may obscure your view or that could offer a hiding place for criminals.
  • Ensure you have adequate lighting on your driveway. Consider installing solar lighting so that you are still protected in case of loadshedding or power cuts.
  • Consider installing a security camera overlooking your gate and driveway. Using the mobile app, you can then check if all is safe before entering or exiting your driveway.
  • Consider installing a Beagle Watch Gate Guardian. This is a very affordable and cost-effective alarm, linked to our Call Centre, that notifies Beagle Watch if your gate is left open longer than a certain period, or when your gate or gate motor is being tampered with.

Braai Day Safety

Make sure your ‘Braai Day’ is safe for the entire family. Beagle Watch offers tips.

Fire safety

  • When lighting a wood fire, use firelighters – never petrol or paraffin.
  • Ensure you are far enough from flammable materials and have a fire extinguisher or hosepipe nearby.
  • Never leave children (or pets) unattended near an open fire.
  • Don’t put warm ashes straight into your bin – even if only slightly hot, it can still melt the plastic and cause a fire or damage.

Personal safety

  • Ensure your electric fence is on and that your gate is closed and entrances are as secure as possible.
  • Always keep a panic button nearby and be aware of your surroundings.
  • If you have a braai at night, ensure that your garden is well lit, especially where intruders may hide.
  • Cars parked outside are a target: Ask visitors to park inside your premises, if possible, or make use of Uber.

Safeguard your keyless car entry system

Criminals are increasingly exploiting keyless entry systems in high-end vehicles, warns Beagle Watch Armed Response.

  • When visiting friends or family, or attending business meetings, always park inside the premises.
  • Always look out for suspicious behaviour and check that you are not being followed, especially if the vehicle is identical to yours.
  • Manually check that your car doors are locked before you walk away.
  • Switch off your key when not in use if your car model offers this functionality (see your owner’s manual).
  • While at home, if your vehicle is not in a lock-up garage, keep your key in a metal tin or something called a Faraday pouch or ‘fob guard’, which is made from materials that block its signal.

Who do you give access to your property?

Did you know that statistics show that eight out of ten residential robberies are committed with the help of information from housekeepers, gardeners and former employees?

Contractors, domestic workers and other service providers therefore could pose security risks. Conducting thorough background checks before allowing anyone access to your premises is therefore paramount.

Before hiring any staff or contractors, ensure they are thoroughly vetted:

  • Check with previous employers going back at least three years.
  • Have the SAPS conduct a background check using fingerprints. This is called a police clearance and comes at a minimal cost.
  • As an additional measure, a polygraph test could be conducted. Although there is much speculation about the results of these, if you have any doubt about the individuals you are employing, it is recommended that you err on the side of caution.
  • Once all the background checks have been completed, ensure you have a copy of all identification documentation, contact details (residence and, if a migrant, details of the home address) as well as next of kin information.

Be safe during power outages

Beagle Watch Armed Response has warned that criminal activity tends to spike during power cuts and load shedding. It is therefore very important to be extra security-aware during these times.

    • Do not leave gates on override mode, as opportunistic criminals are then able to get easy access to your property.
    • Ensure your alarm system’s back-up battery can last at least three hours and continue to arm your system as you would normally do.
    • Eliminate dark spots in your garden and around your property by investing in solar lighting.
    • Ensure that all doors and windows are closed and locked – especially at night – including garage doors and tool sheds.
    • Lock vehicles parked on your property and do not leave valuables in vehicles.

NEW! Solar solution to keep your alarm system running

How do you keep your alarm system and other security systems running and functional during a protracted power outage? Beagle Watch is the first to offer a definitive solution!

While regularly replacing back-up batteries is advisable, it is not a long-term solution. With ongoing loadshedding and power cuts the battery does not get sufficient time to recharge and the battery cells start to die off. This means that the battery lasts for shorter and shorter times.

Beagle Watch’s team of technical experts are the first to develop a workable solution to ensure your continued security during power cuts. The system is also suitable to keep electric fences and gate motors powered up.

A solar option offers a long-term solution to the challenge of keeping your alarm system active.

During times of loadshedding during the day, the solar unit will ensure your battery continues charging so that it is fully charged to ensure it lasts the night.

Everything you need to keep your security systems running, including a 60W solar panel, 12V 18 AMP battery, cabling, brackets and casings! Installed quickly, neatly and efficiently.

Check electric fences after storms

Heavy rains and storms can cause some electric fence problems.

  • Water causes a reaction called arcing which causes that well-known ‘tick tick’ sound.
  • Arcing is in essence the fence shorting. It drains the voltage that is carried along the fence and can potentially damage the energiser.
  • When there is heavy rain, the weight of the water can cause vegetation to collapse onto the fence, therefore, cause arcing or shorting.
  • Therefore, the best time to check your electric fence is just after it has been raining, as you can listen for a ticking noise. This will tell you where the short is. The first step is always to switch off the fence for your safety.
  • Cut back shrubs and prune trees, as foliage touching the electric fence wires can cause short circuits and reduce its effectiveness.
  • Check your electric fence regularly for damaged, broken or corroded wires.

Safeguard yourself against opportunistic theft

Please ensure cars and garages are locked at night and that alarm systems and beams are activated. This is the advice from Beagle Watch Armed Response.

  • Beagle Watch has noticed an increase in criminal activities at night, especially during times of loadshedding and around bin collection days, when vagrant activity increases.
  • This has led to an increase in opportunistic theft, with items being stolen out of vehicles, unlocked garages, and from gardens.
  • Please ensure that gates and garage doors are locked and windows are closed at night.
  • Do not leave wallets, cash, laptops and other valuable items in cars.
  • Do not leave tools, bicycles or other items outside.
  • Activate alarm systems and outside beams and invest in solar lighting around your property.

Do you have security the basics in place?

“The Silly Season crime spike has certainly arrived, and I would therefore like to caution residents to be extra conscious with your personal and home security and continue to take as many preventative measures as possible,” warns Beagle Watch Managing Director, André Aiton.

  • We often find that clients omit to arm alarm systems, outside beams and electric fences. Please ensure that these are armed whenever possible, but at least at night or during power cuts.
  • Lock doors and security gates and close windows without burglar bars, especially at night.
  • The theft of garden tools is on the increase. These are often sold or used as handy aids to either gain entry to your house – or are used at the suspects’ next target. Kindly ensure that garages and garden sheds are locked at night and that no tools or stepladders are left outside in the garden.

Now is the time to check your security systems

The start of the new year is an opportune time to check your security systems.

“A security alarm system or smoke detector are only worthwhile if they are in good working order, so it is important that they are checked regularly,” says André Aiton, MD of Beagle Watch Armed Response.

“It is no use having a panic button if the batteries are flat or a smoke alarm that doesn’t trigger during a fire.”

Similarly, electric fences should be checked regularly and outside beams should be maintained and checked frequently – especially after a storm.

“Ensuring that these and other home security systems are in working order is vital to the safety of the home and its occupants,” cautions Aiton.

High-end vehicles remain a target

The theft of high-end SUVs and bakkies, especially Toyota Fortuners and Hilux models continues.

“This has been a growing trend across our footprint for some time,” warns André Aiton, Beagle Watch Managing Director.

Incidents of theft have mainly occurred around residential complexes or when vehicles were parked outside in the street, social gatherings, sports events and around schools.

  • Please ensure these vehicles are locked at all times and that the vehicle’s alarm is activated.
  • Park the vehicle in a locked-up garage at night.
  • If possible, do not park the vehicle at large events, such as social gatherings, sports events or at schools.
  • Park inside the yard when visiting friends or family.

If possible, always walk or run with a group or a dog.
Be aware of your environment at all times.
Never walk or run with earphones.
Leave your phone at home.
Take off all jewellery and rings (criminals have been known to bite rings off fingers).
If possible, take along pepper spray.

Wheelie bin safety

  • When taking out or bringing in your wheelie bin, please be aware of your surroundings and first check that all is clear before opening the gate.
  • Always have a panic button with you in case of an emergency.
  • Criminals love wheelie bins. When left outside, they offer height to scale walls, can serve as a hiding place, and provide information on what you may have bought, such as high-value items.

Ensure your Heritage Day braai is a safe one

Make sure your ‘Braai Day’ is safe for the entire family. Beagle Watch offers tips.

Fire safety

  • When lighting a wood fire, use firelighters – never petrol or paraffin.
  • Ensure you are far enough from flammable materials and have a fire extinguisher or hosepipe nearby.
  • Never leave children (or pets) unattended near an open fire.
