Simple steps to ensure your safety at home
“Getting an early warning about a possible intrusion on your premises is vital in preventing and managing incidents.” This is the advice of Beagle Watch Managing Director, André Aiton. He offers a few pointers.

- Ensure that perimeter security systems are in good working order and tested regularly.
- Check and test electric fences regularly and ensure they are armed at all times and linked to a reputable armed response company. Cut back any foliage that could interfere with the fence.
- Check and test external security beams and arm them whenever possible. Also check that their batteries are in good working order and cut back any shrubs that might cause false alarms.
- Report all suspicious activity to your security service provider, especially at night.
- Do not become complacent about your home security.

Don’t give criminals tools to access your premises
- Criminals love wheelie bins, stepladders and garden tools.
- When left outside, a wheelie bin offers height to scale walls, can serve as a hiding place and provides information on what you may have bought, such as high-value items.
- Ladders left out in the garden are handy for getting to an open window, while cutters and other implements can be used to force open security gates, doors or knock out a window.
- Only take your wheelie bin outside on the morning of collection day and keep it inside the yard and out of sight the rest of the time.
- Store tools and other equipment in a locked shed or locked garage.

Are the police doing enough?
KAPHERINE MACHER: I don’t think the police are doing enough. The response time is not great. I have been pulled over for no reason, and they try to get a bribe. I don’t know what the point is of having the police force if you are not doing your job. If I am doing something wrong, fine me. You are employed by the government, your job is to protect the people, not to get bribes from them.
