UJ hosts thriving OR Tambo-Soncini Social cohesion games
UJ celebrated the spirit of unity and athleticism at the 7th Annual O.R Tambo-Soncini Social Cohesion Games, where young talent from Gauteng and Italy come together to honor a legacy of freedom and friendship.
The University of Johannesburg (UJ) proudly hosted the 7th annual OR Tambo-Soncini Social Cohesion Games over the weekend of October 26–27 at its Kingsway Campus.
Organised by the Gauteng Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, this year’s event attracted more than 1 000 young athletes from across Gauteng, alongside a contingent from the city of Reggio Emilia in Italy.

The games serve as a remembrance of Italian politician Guiseppe Soncini, who passed away in April 1991, for his efforts in promoting links between Reggio Emilia and southern African countries, in particular anti-colonial and anti-apartheid movements in the 1970s.
Participants showcased their skills in various sports, including rugby, football, basketball, athletics, netball, and swimming.
Gcina Panyana, the tournament director for basketball, expressed pride in the event’s success, highlighting the enthusiasm and talent displayed by all teams, including the visiting Italian squad.
“These cohesion games were hosted in the city of Joburg at UJ, bringing together all the municipal regions of Gauteng – Joburg, Tshwane, Ekurhuleni, West Rand, and Sedibeng.

“This year, we also welcomed the Soncini team from Reggio Emilia,” Panyana said.
He emphasised that the vision of the games in fostering relationships between South Africa and Italy was evident in the continued growth of the event.
“The games were part of the October celebrations honouring OR Tambo Month, commemorating the legacy of the esteemed South African leader.
“Tambo shared a significant bond with the late Soncini of Reggio Emilia, who played a crucial role in supporting South Africa’s political freedom fighters during the apartheid era. The social cohesion is apparent through our efforts to identify and engage young athletes who might not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in sports.”
The games not only celebrated athleticism but also served as a platform for building community ties and promoting inclusivity among young athletes.
