Abbotts College Northcliff presents first-of-its-kind art exhibit, courtesy of its senior visual arts and design students

The school's visual art and design learners hosted the event which saw them leave their audience in awe of their talents.

Abbotts College Northcliff’s senior visual arts and design learners hosted guests to a first-of-its-kind interactive art exhibition. The exhibition displayed the learners’ body of work for 2024, and included their final examination pieces for the year.

For the event, the visual art class was tasked to think outside the box, and to create pieces using non-traditional drawing mediums. Teacher at the school, Toni Powell-Venter, said they created charcoal and ink pieces, coffee stained paintings, and watercolour and ink works. To marvel over these art pieces were guest that included tertiary institutions such as Stadio, University of Johannesburg, Vullioti School of Fashion, Open Window, and Vega.

The evening, which had sounds of laughter and violins echo through Northcliff also featured live painters whose artworks were bid on at the end of the evening, with the proceeds of which going back to the learners.

Powell-Venter said through art and design, learners gain more than just technical skills. They develop a creative mindset and resilience as they explore different mediums and expressive possibilities. “This process helps foster problem-solving skills, boosts confidence, and provides a means for emotional expression – essential components of a holistic education. This exhibition demonstrates how the arts and design studies enriches students’ experiences, encouraging them to push boundaries and express themselves in original and impactful ways.”
