Residents feel relief as City of Johannesburg launches first debt relief open day at Marks Park

Hundreds queue for the city's inaugural municipal open day, where entities were all under one roof, offering hands on help with debt relief applications.

Eager to resolve their municipal billing issues and seek help in balancing their accounts, residents flocked to Marks Park Sports Ground on November 8 for the City of Johannesburg’s first-ever open day.
The open day provided a one-stop platform where residents could engage directly with account managers, technicians, and senior officials from City Power, Johannesburg Water, and Pikitup… All under one roof.

The open day marked the first of its kind since the launch of the city’s new debt relief programme, a year-long initiative designed to help residents, businesses, and organisations bring their accounts back to equilibrium. According to Poppy Louw, PR specialist in the city’s Group Finance Department, the programme – approved by council on October 30 – represents the fourth phase of Johannesburg’s relief efforts since 2017. Previous phases, she noted, predated the Covid-19 pandemic, which left many households struggling financially.

The current programme focuses on:
• Supporting households and businesses facing financial hardship,
• Protecting vulnerable communities, such as pensioners and indigent residents,
• Rebuilding trust,
• Strengthening partnerships between residents and the city, and
• Ensuring inclusive access to essential municipal services.

Louw acknowledged the frustrations many residents have experienced with online systems, emphasising the city’s recognition of the need for face-to-face interaction. “We have seen that many residents prefer direct management, and that is why these open days are so important. We bring services closer to the people.”

The city has planned several more open day sessions across different regions before the financial year ends in June 2026, giving residents further opportunities to seek help and resolve their municipal concerns.
