JRA barricades Hofmeyer Road section while stream blockage plans finalised

Preliminary inspections traced the erosion to overgrown trees blocking water flow.

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) said the eroded section of Hofmeyer Drive in Emmarentia has been barricaded while plans are finalised to address the problem and hopefully bring some relief to motorists.

Responding to a media query about the damage, JRA head of regional operations Khaya Gqibitole said the barricading had been done as a precaution for motorists. According to JRA, preliminary inspections carried out on March 3 identified overgrown trees along the stream that are impeding water flow and diverting the water onto the road, resulting in erosion. The trees would need to be removed so that water can return to its natural course to prevent further erosion, he said. “Once the construction is cleared, the damaged section of the road will be reinstated.

He said that at this stage, there are no indications of major structural damage to the road that would deem it unsafe for traffic and pedestrians. He assured that JRA will continue to monitor the site to ensure the safety of road users. “The reinstatement of the damaged road section will be prioritised, and an estimated time of repair will be communicated.”

Moving forward, he confirmed that JRA will work with other city entities, including the Environmental Infrastructure Services Department and the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo, to monitor the stream and manage vegetation to prevent similar incidents in future.
