Service station owners help out during the strike

Owners of service stations have no say in offering a wage increase to petrol attendants; this is left for government to decide

With the national petrol attendants’ strike ongoing, Sondela Service Station owners the Potgieter family and friends have taken on the challenge of being attendants.
They have all been filling up fuel tanks and cleaning car windows. The Potgieter family would like to thank the police and security services for helping them out during the strike period.
They add that owners of service stations have no say in offering a wage increase to petrol attendants. This is left for government to decide.
Strikers were spotted toyi-toyi’ing outside BP Service Station in Harrismith Road recently as they demanded to be paid R30 an hour, as well as get shift work. The protesters were dressed in NUMSA (Nation Union of Metalworkers of South Africa ) T-shirts and armed with vuvuzelas. A member of the public commented that the strike is “completely nonsensical”. He also pointed out that “out of roughly 300 petrol workers in Ladysmith, there are only about 20 who are actively involved here!”
