Burned “Prostitute Tree” about to topple over onto home or business in Ladysmith

People have reported that prostitutes hang around the area almost every night, burning the massive tree at the bottom in order to stay warm

A well-known hangout spot for prostitutes in Ladysmith is now posing a danger to people in Lyell Street.

This is because a tree around which the prostitutes gather is about to topple over. The bottom of the tree trunk is regularly set alight for warmth, with the “ladies of the night” huddling around the fire.

However, the tree has been burned so much that there is hardly any of the trunk left to keep it standing. A house and a business are situated nearby, and could bear the brunt if the tree should come crashing down.

Many people in the area, including business owners, have complained that the tree is a ticking time bomb waiting to fall on the home or nearby business.

People have complained to IFP councillor L Bhoobun, who is trying to address the problem and have the tree removed so that it does not cause damage or even injure a person.

People have reported that prostitutes hang around the area almost every night, burning the massive tree at the bottom in order to stay warm. “At any time, the tree could just come crashing down and who knows where it will land. A person could be walking underneath it, with disastrous consequences,” said one resident.

Cllr Bhoobun says that, to make matters worse, the smell coming from the area is unbearable, with 100s of condom wrappers and used condoms scattered on the ground.

The community of Lyell Street, as well as Cllr Bhoobun, want the tree removed and the area cleaned up.
