WATCH: Makeshift dumpsite forms in Barry Hertzog Park
A makeshift dumpsite has formed beneath the Drakensberg Drive bridge, and is evidence of how severe this problem has become.
Rampant dumping has claimed an isolated portion of Barry Hertzog Park.
Residents contacted the Newcastle Advertiser this week, to report dumping of building waste.
Investigation revealed the problem was far more severe.
A makeshift dumpsite has formed beneath the Drakensberg Street bridge – near the FW Beyers intersection.
Bottles, building rubble and general waste litter a wide area.
There is also evidence of vagrants taking up residence beneath the bridge.
It remains unclear who caused the mess and how long it took to reach this point.
Irrespective, the municipality was contacted for response and to resolve the matter.
Officials were also alerted to a similar problem in vacant land off Coronation Road, Schuinshoogte.
Response to these reports of illegal dumping is expected soon.
