JUST IN: Hijacked vehicle recovered on Harding Street

"The entire Newcastle 911 group, a local security company and SAPS members joined forces and immediately conducted a manhunt for the suspects."

An elderly woman can rest assured after the man who hijacked her last night (May 28) was caught and arrested.

According to head of Newcastle 911, Mornè Potgieter, the elderly woman was assaulted and hijacked in front of her home on Voortrekker Street, at around 5pm.

The suspect also made away with her cellphone, handbag and an undisclosed amount of cash.

The incident was reported on social media, as well as to all necessary authorities, including the SAPS and Newcastle 911.

“The entire Newcastle 911 group, a local security company and SAPS members joined forces and immediately conducted a manhunt for the suspects.”

According to Potgieter, members kept close surveillance on the suspect, who managed to keep evading arrest.

“A 911 response member then spotted a suspicious person, and called it into the control room. Once the suspect realised he had been spotted, he attempted to run away again. However, authorities soon found him hiding under a truck.”

After being caught, the suspect then led authorities to the whereabouts of the stolen vehicle. The victim’s personal belongings were also recovered.

Potgieter thanked the entire 911 team, the security team, Imran Ghafoor and officers Matthew Rose and Preetam Birbal for their invaluable help in arresting the suspect in record time.
