Volunteer for CANSA Newcastle, Mona Maharaj received the cheque on behalf of the organisation, at a ceremony held at the Newcastle Club on June 6.
“CANSA extends its heartfelt thanks to the Volleyball Club. Let this be an example to motivate other clubs,” said Maharaj.
Thirteen teams participated in the tournament with members from as far as Ladysmith supporting the cause.
“Raising funds for CANSA hits close to home as some members in the volleyball teams are cancer survivors themselves,” said a club member.
The club thanked its sponsors and donors who aided in the success of the tournament.
“This is the first of many, we hope to host the tournament annually. It was great to see Newcastle come together to help the charity.”
The club encouraged other sports clubs and organisations to match or beat their donation.
