AfriForum ‘Bulldog’ Gerrie Nel brings enlightenment on corruption to Vryheid through information
The meeting covered many interesting aspects of the organisation’s approach to the absolutely crucial stamping out of corruption in South Africa.
THE Oxford English Dictionary defines corruption as “dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery…”
Former president of Kosovo, Atifete Jahjaga, who served her term from 2011 to 2016, once said, “Democracy must be built through open societies that share information. When there is information, there is enlightenment. When there is debate, there are solutions. When there is no sharing of power, no rule of law, no accountability, there is abuse, corruption, subjugation and indignation.”

Residents of Vryheid, as well as AfriForum members from Vryheid, Pongola, Paulpietersburg, Utrecht and Newcastle branches, attended what has been described as an “eye-opening” and informative meeting, held at the NG Moedergemeente ‘Klipkerk’ Hall recently, where former prosecutor for the National Prosecuting Authority of South Africa, Advocate Gerrie Nel, shared some interesting pearls of wisdom on the topic of corruption in South Africa.
Often referred to as a ‘Bulldog’ for his no-nonsense approach to meting out justice at every level, it’s no wonder that Nel has found himself a highly respected position within AfriForum, an organisation often described as a human rights ‘watchdog’ at a national level.

The meeting, which lasted approximately three hours, covered many interesting aspects of the organisation’s approach to the absolutely crucial stamping out of corruption in South Africa and provided insight into the differing manner in which various cases are handled by AfriForum to ensure guilty verdicts where necessary.
“We are certain that all who attended the meeting now think very differently about corruption than they did before…” says Chairman of AfriForum’s Vryheid branch, Andrè van der Walt. “It was an absolute honour for us at the Vryheid branch of AfriForum to welcome our respected ‘Bulldog’, Advocate Gerrie Nel, to share his knowledge and expertise with us.”
“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark…”is one of the most famous lines from Shakespeare’s Hamlet, uttered by Marcellus, a palace guard, in reference to the corruption and decay that befalls the kingdom and, with corruption in South Africa at its current level, threatening to destroy the future of the nation, one might be inclined to comprehend the parallels between Shakespeare’s fictional kingdom and South Africa’s very real dilemma.
Unless action is taken and corruption ripped out at its roots, hope is lost for our democratic future as South Africans. AfriForum is committed to tightening their grip and having their hands firmly on those roots when the necessary ripping commences.
