Project cleans up Lakeside
"To change our world, we need to change the intentions of our hearts. This is my town and I will be part of making it better."

A group of volunteers, led by Rhoda Limburgh of non-profit organisation Lighthouse Ministries, have cleaned up the streets of Lakeside.
The children who assisted Limburgh are regulars at her weekly soup kitchen every Thursday, and were all to eager to assist her last Wednesday (June 19) during the massive clean-up campaign.
Volunteers were divided into five groups.
A brightly coloured ribbon, to represent each of these respective groups, was tied around each child’s wrist, with each team of jubilant children led by an adult chaperone.
One of the volunteers, Louise Theron was very pleased at the turnout.
“This is contagious. It will start here and spread like wildfire.”
No sooner had she said that, when two children came running from a nearby house to see what was going on, and subsequently joined in the clean-up operation.
“It is important we teach our children about the importance of cleanliness, not only in themselves, but also in their immediate environment.” said Catherine Doherty-Bigara, a teacher at a local primary school.
Hendrik Benade, from a local prayer group, said he was touched by the day’s proceedings.
“This initiative was a great success, not only because it was a demonstration of love, resulting in a clean environment, but the children were taught not to litter. More importantly, a sense of community and belonging was established.
To change our world, we need to change the intentions of our hearts. This is my town and I will be part of making it better.”
After the clean-up operation was complete, the children were each given a gift pack comprising sweets, a packet of chips and a cold drink.
Limburgh expressed her heartfelt sentiments at the project’s success.
“Thank you for allowing opportunities for life changing possibilities, full of new hope.”
She thanked all residents and businesses, who assisted the campaign through sponsorship and donations, and thanked Abaqulusi Municipality in particular for providing black refuse bags.
