Professor Adam Habib, Vice-Chancellor at Wits University, delivered an inspiring and interesting discourse, motivating teachers to be the ‘pioneers’ of saving the human species as a collective.
He highlighted the four main ingredients needed to fix primary education: learners must be in class, teachers must be engaged in teaching, teachers must know the subject matter, infrastructure such as toilets are essential.
Prof. Habib emphasised learners required basic skills of reading, writing and life skills to succeed at university level.
In conclusion, he touched on the far-reaching effects of social media and its impact on increasing mental illness and encouraged teachers to continue in their ‘quest to make a difference’ in the lives of the learners.
