SAPS Forensics staff celebrate Heritage Day in vibrant style

SAPS Forensics staff celebrate Heritage Day with colour, music, food and cultural pride.

The SAPS Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) came alive with colour, music and cultural pride last Thursday as staff celebrated Heritage Day. Employees arrived in traditional attire, creating a lively display of patterns, fabrics and colours that reflected the country’s diversity.

The offices were decorated strictly in South African style, with displays and crafts representing the nation’s rich cultural heritage. Lieutenant Colonel Ferreira opened the day with a short ceremony, speaking about the significance of Heritage Day and the importance of recognising the different cultures within the workplace. “Heritage Day is about remembering where we come from and respecting the variety of backgrounds that make our team stronger,” he said.

After the ceremony, staff shared a meal featuring an array of traditional dishes prepared by employees themselves. The conference room was filled with laughter and the sounds of colleagues exchanging stories about family traditions and childhood memories.

Music and dance were the highlights of the day. Groups of staff performed traditional dances, and others joined in by singing songs from their cultural heritage. Many took photos to capture the colourful outfits and lively moments, creating memories that will be remembered long after the event.

Ferreira noted that Heritage Day also serves a deeper purpose for the team. “Many of our members are exposed daily to crime scenes and difficult situations,” he said. “Events like this give them a chance to connect and relax, away from the horrific scenes they face in their work.”

Ferreira added that the celebrations aimed to foster unity and understanding among employees. “It’s not only about enjoying the food or the music,” he said. “It’s about learning from each other and celebrating the rich tapestry of cultures we have here in our community.”

The day ended on a relaxed and joyful note, with employees sharing recipes, tips and stories. Several staff members commented that events like this strengthen relationships and make the workplace feel more like a community.

Heritage Day at the Forensics Department offered a glimpse into the country’s traditions while bringing colleagues closer together, a reminder that the work they do every day is supported by a diverse and united team.
