The older generation are always talking about how the new generation does not know how to have fun and interact with other children. Has technology really taken over and deprived children from being children?
Here are five games from your childhood to make you nostalgic:
1. Marbles
For those who don’t know, marbles is played with a circle drawn on a pavement in chalk, or made out of string if you are playing indoors on carpet.
A shooter marble, which is generally bigger than the other marbles, is used to hit five to 10 marbles placed in the ring.
The aim of the game is to hit as many marbles out of the ring until the ring is empty.
The player with the most marbles at the end of the game wins!
2. Three tins
3 Tins is an indigenous game played in South African townships, with a ball made out of paper and plastic or a tennis ball and tins. Hence the name 3 Tins.
Not much research has been done to find out how the game started, but we know that our parents and grandparents played it. 3 Tins is not a gender specific game; everyone can participate and it is so much fun.
Stacking three tins one on top of the other and trying to knock it down with a ball has never been so much fun.
3. Hopscotch
Hopscotch is a children’s game that can be played with several players or alone. Hopscotch is a popular playground game in which players toss a small object into numbered rectangles outlined on the ground, then hop or jump through the spaces to retrieve the object.
4. Roller-blades
Roller-blades were first invented for fitness and were known as inline skates.
Unlike quad skates, which have two front and two rear wheels, inline skates typically have two to five wheels arranged in a single line. Some have a rubber “stop” or “brake” block attached to rear of the frame.
Many broken bones and scraped knees were a result of roller-blading, but it was still entertaining.
5. Jump rope
Skipping is more than a game–it’s great exercise and improves your child’s coordination.
This game can be played alone or in a group.
All one needed was a long piece of rope and you were ‘A ‘ for away.
Two friends would hold each end of the rope and swing it in a clockwise motion, while the third friend hopped and skipped to avoid touching the rope.
