WATCH: JB Marks launches electronic speed measuring cameras
JB Marks Local Municipality has launched electronic speed measuring cameras to enhance road safety and enforce traffic laws.
In a bid to enhance road safety and curb reckless driving, JB Marks Local Municipality has officially launched its electronic speed measuring cameras. The launch took place on Wednesday, 6 November 2024, and marks a significant step towards ensuring the safety of both motorists and pedestrians in the region.
The Municipality’s leadership, including Executive Mayor, Cllr. Gaba Thithiba Ka Qhele, has called on law enforcement officers to reinforce their efforts in maintaining a strict presence on the roads, particularly as the holiday season approaches. With an increasing number of vehicles on the roads during this period, the Municipality is ramping up its focus on ensuring that traffic laws are strictly adhered to.
“One of our top priorities is community safety,” Mayor Ka Qhele emphasized. “We cannot afford to compromise on the protection of our citizens. With the launch of these new electronic speed measuring cameras, we are taking a proactive stance to reduce accidents and fatalities.”
The move to introduce the electronic cameras comes after years of advocacy and planning, with the Municipality committing significant resources to improve law enforcement mechanisms. Councillor Leon Musa Mkhabela, who serves as a Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Safety, highlighted that the project has been years in the making. “It’s been a long journey, but today, we are proud to officially launch these advanced tools to help make our roads safer for everyone,” he said.
According to the Director of the Directorate of Community Safety, Mr. Collen Pitso Mofokeng, the new system is designed to be both effective and efficient. “These cameras will provide real-time data and assist in enforcing the law across key traffic points. They are not just about issuing fines, but also about instilling a sense of responsibility among motorists to obey traffic laws at all times,” said Mofokeng.
As the holiday season nears, officials are stressing that there will be zero tolerance for any violations on the roads. Motorists are urged to adhere to speed limits, avoid driving under the influence of alcohol, and follow all road safety regulations. The introduction of the cameras is seen as an important step toward creating a safer, more controlled driving environment.
In addition to the technological upgrade, the Municipality is calling for greater community involvement. “We need everyone to play their part. Road safety is a shared responsibility, and we urge citizens to remain vigilant and report any dangerous driving behaviors,” said Councillor Mkhabela.
