A 20-year-old student of the NWU and resident of the Hombre men’s residence was killed during a hit and run incident in his home town of Robertson on Friday night, May 9.
According to police, Leithen Louw was hit at about 22:30 close to his parents home. The person who hit him fled the scene, the police immediately started looking for the suspect and quickly found him.
“The 40-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with driving under the influence and culpable homocide,” said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi. He will appear in court today, May 12. Louw was declared dead on the scene of the accident.
Louw was a third year education student at the NWU.
“Leithen was more than just a student among us – he was a friend, a brother, a dedicated student and one of our peer helpers; a valued part of our residence community. His presence will be sorely missed, and the loss leaves a heavy weight on all our hearts. He will always remain part of this Hombré family. We ask that you please keep Leithen’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Let us honour his memory by supporting one another with compassion, understanding, and unity in the days ahead,” the residence said in a statement.
