Orion College lights up with literary costumes for World Book Day

Principal Barbra Robinson explained that all the funds and books collected would go towards improving the school library.

Orion College in Randpark Ridge was filled with excitement on April 26 as teachers and learners wore costumes inspired by their favourite book characters to celebrate World Book Day. The event not only brought joy and creativity but also helped raise funds for the school’s library.

Principal Barbra Robinson expressed her delight at the enthusiastic participation of students and staff. “The reason that we’re raising funds today is to make improvements to our library. So, all the children contributed R10 or they donated a book that goes towards our library.”

In addition to fundraising, the event aimed to promote a love for reading among learners in an era dominated by digital media. “We believe that hosting events like this encourages the children to read, seeing that children today turn to social media to learn or be entertained,” Robinson noted.

Although World Book Day fell on Monday, April 22, Orion College strategically kept the festivities for the end of the week. “The kids love dressing up and we try to do this several times a year for various reasons. It was World Book Day on Monday, but we like to keep events like this on Fridays towards the end of the week so the fun runs into the weekend.”

For the learners, the opportunity to dress up as beloved literary characters was a highlight of the day, especially when they visited the library. “On Fridays, we open the library and the classes come down to the library one class at a time. Children need to get into reading and experiencing the magic of books. Today they get to do that dressed up as their favourite characters.”
