Honeydew Police Station’s standing in the first-quarter crime stats

Crime statistics are an important link in the value chain of the statistics system, influencing policy creation and planning in the criminal justice system.

Gauteng published it first-quarter crime statistics from April to June 2024, on August 30.

In the police stations around Randburg, Honeydew was mentioned in most categories, with stats showing increase and decrease compared to the April 2023 to
June 2023.

On the 17 community-reported serious crimes categories Honeydew was placed seventh in the top 30 police stations in the country and third in the province. They had 1 743 cases reported and showed a decrease of 31 compared to last year.

Contact crime, which refers to crimes in which the victims are the targets of violence or instances where they are in the vicinity of property that criminals target and are subjected to the use of/or threats of violence by perpetrators, and includes:

• Murder
• Attempted murder
• Sexual offences
• Rape
• Sexual assault
• Attempted sexual offences
• Contact sexual assault
• Assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm
• Common assault
• Common robbery
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances
• Robbery of cash in transit
• Truck hijacking

Common robbery Randburg was placed 11th in Gauteng with 61 cases reported compared to the 77 of last year.

In the Trio crimes, made up of carjacking, robbery at non-residential premises, and robbery at residential premises, Honeydew saw the increase of 76 cases reported compared to 75 on the 2023 stats. They also saw five counts higher in truck hijacking cases from one in 2023 to 6. Honeydew was also 20 counts higher in kidnapping cases with 31 reported.

Honeydew was second place in Gauteng with 4.7% decrease in the property-related crime compared to 2023. Property-related crime refers to crimes during which tangible property of an individual or institution is taken by criminal elements without permission, and in the absence of the owner/custodian of such property.

This type of crime includes burglary at both residential and non-residential premises, theft of motor vehicles and motorcycles, theft out of or from motor vehicles, and stock-theft.

Honeydew was placed 4th in Gauteng, recording 20.6% decrease in burglary at residential premises. They recorded 38.5% increase on burglary at non-residential premises. They were also second place in both National and Gauteng with 25.6% increase. Theft out of or from motor vehicle cases decreased with 18.1%.

Honeydew and Douglasdale recorded and increase of 5.7% and 6.9% in other serious crimes category that includes all theft not mentioned elsewhere, commercial crime, and shoplifting.

In the All theft not mentioned elsewhere category Honeydew was placed second in the province recording 356 cases. They had an increase of 20.8% in commercial crime with Douglasdale on 10.6%.

Shoplifting cases saw Honeydew with 75 cases compared to the 69 of 2023.
