The primary aim of the event was to raise awareness about gender-based violence (GBV) and support the dignity bag initiative, which helps individuals affected by GBV.

The funds raised will go towards providing essential hygiene items, offering individuals in need the chance to regain their dignity during incredibly difficult times. It is also a direct way to support those who may not have access to basic hygiene necessities.

Nanine Levitz, of Bet on Better, explained that with 197 skaters participating, the turnout was impressive, and the fundraising exceeded expectations. “Not only did it raise awareness; it also raised an impressive amount of money, demonstrating the incredible generosity of those who came out to support.”

She further stated that the event was not only an exciting opportunity to come together; it also highlighted the importance of raising awareness for GBV. “It was a collective effort filled with inspiring moments, where the community united to make a tangible impact. In South Africa, hosting events like these are critical, as they promote youth empowerment, community support, and advocacy for GBV education. The energy from the event was incredible, and it was uplifting to work alongside such dedicated people to make a real difference.”

Both young and old filled the ice rink, with some skating like professionals, while others having a good laugh each time they fell. Levitz added that the event went beyond expectations, as it was far more successful than anticipated. “It was heartwarming to see the turnout, and the support was overwhelming.”

The NPO has already booked the date for the next event on July 27, to commemorate Mandela Day. “It’s amazing to know that there is already momentum to keep this important cause alive in the community.”
