Diggers’ difficult start in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge

The team has lost their first three games, going down to Randfontein 14–60 and University of Johannesburg 17–40.

Following their promotion the previous season, the Diggers Rugby Club first team is struggling in the Castle Lager Pirates Grand Challenge.

They recently hosted North-West University Pukke in hopes of changing their run in the league, however, they went down heavily, 7–94 in front of their home crowd.

Diggers coach Kane Mavrodaris said, “It was our first time we played Pukke in a long time, and players got exposed to a team that’s very quick in their setups, have great skills and offloads. It was also a bit of an eye-opener for a lot of guys. With this result, it’s a hard pill to swallow and not a score you want to see, a lot of times.”

He added that there were a lot of learning points from the game.

“We’re going to work on tackle technique and definitely on hustling when there’s a turnover. We will also look at transition, I feel that’s where we lost the game. We just need to be more accurate in general areas.”
