Intensifying its efforts to curb road lawlessness across the province, the Gauteng Transport Inspectorate (GTI) conducted large-scale enforcement operations, resutling in dozens of arrests, hundreds of fines, and several vehicles being taken off the road.

According to the GTI, more than 200 manual infringement notices were issued, alongside 171 electronic notices processed through the inspectorate’s e-force system. Officers also issued 62 discontinuity notices and impounded 33 vehicles found to be severely non-compliant.
The operation also uncovered widespread violations among taxi operators. Fifty drivers were found operating without valid licences, 69 vehicles were without licence discs, and 28 taxis were discontinued for safety reasons.

In one incident, in Randburg, GTI officers arrested 26 undocumented Malawian nationals travelling in an overloaded 15-seater taxi. The vehicle, which had no trailer attached, had passengers’ luggage packed inside the cabin, creating unsafe travel conditions.
Officers also made arrests for other serious offences, including one case of attempted bribery and eight cases of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Gauteng MEC for Roads and Transport Kedibone Diale-Tlabela commended GTI officers for their professionalism and ongoing commitment to keeping provincial roads safe. “Road safety is not negotiable. Every driver, every operator, and every passenger must play their part in protecting lives on our roads.”
She added that these enforcement operations form part of a long-term strategy to promote compliance and accountability within the public transport sector. “These results show that our officers are working tirelessly to make Gauteng’s roads safer. We will continue to act decisively against those who disregard the law.”
