Community Heroes hunt stench source, making discovery in Pampoen Spruit

In their hunt for the source of a foul stench, the Community Heroes discovered a sewage leak inside the Pampoen Spruit, one that has been troubling residents for some time.

The Community Heroes have been applauded by Ward 101 councillor Ralf Bittkau, after they went on a hunt, discovering sewage issues in the Pampoen Spruit.

After enduring an unexplained stench around the area, a group of residents walked up to the river, following the smell and also the visible signs of a sewage spill.
The first leak they found seemed to originate in the west of Beyers Naude Drive, but, along the spruit, the group also discovered a large pipe, gushing out sewage.

Bittkau explained that, as this administration has proven itself to be close to useless, he welcomes the residents coming to the fore and helping to save this city. “Following the detailed feedback from the residents, I was able to put additional pressure on Johannesburg Water, through their CEO. Finally, after months and months of avoiding and making excuses, they are taking action.”

He added that the disregard for the environment by Johannesburg Water is unbelievable. “All our sewer spills, directly or indirectly, end up in our river systems. As we are on a watershed, we are destroying the rivers going south and west, as well as those going north and east.”

Resident Carsten Ullmann, who was part of the hunt, explained that the pipe must have been leaking for a year, looking at the erosion around it. “When we were cleaning Kowie Road, I was directing traffic and stood above the spruit for almost four hours. When they mentioned that they have been reporting a leak for a while now, I decided to take a walk up the spruit, to see if we could find something. I didn’t know what to expect. I was looking for an overflowing manhole, rather than this destroyed sewerage pipe.”

Community Heroes is made up of residents from Bromhof, Boskruin, Northworld, and surrounding areas. They continue their ongoing dedication to improving the communities. Their consistency and passion set a powerful example, as they don’t just highlight issues; they roll up their sleeves and take action.
