Johannesburg Roads Agency fails to attend to sinkholes on Denise Circle

Acting ward councillor Bea Campbell-Cloete is calling for urgent action on two hazardous sinkholes located on Denise Circle in Blairgowrie.

There have been no answers from Johannesburg Road Agency (JRA) regarding the two sinkholes on Denise Circle in Blairgowrie.

The sinkholes have left local leaders shaken, prompting immediate concern for public safety. Despite numerous escalations and reports, JRA has not attended to the issue. One sinkhole has opened on the side of the road, posing a serious risk to motorists and cyclists using the residential street. The second, equally dangerous, has formed on the pavement just metres away, along a stretch frequently used by families, joggers, and dog walkers.

According to Ward 102 acting councillor Bea Campbell-Cloete, the hole is estimated to be between two and three metres deep. Deep inside, there is water that runs through. She confirmed that they have been reported to JRA, but nothing has been done. “JRA said they are busy with sinkholes at the moment. They will attend to it. My worry is the safety of the community, as you cannot see these sinkholes.” Until repairs are made, residents are urged to exercise extreme caution to prevent what could become a tragic accident.
Harold Fleisman, of the Blairgowrie Community Association, feels the issue should be treated as an emergency. “Unfortunately, JRA are so inundated. There are potholes all over the place. I suppose it comes down to a matter of urgency.

“This one in the park might not seem so urgent, but if somebody falls in it, then it’s going to be very urgent and serious. The other one is actually on the road. Cars can drive over the road and could also end up in a big sinkhole.”
