Wet Nose recovering after devastating fire

It seems that the generosity of businesses and animal lovers may save the Wet Nose organisation after its terrible ordeal 2 months ago.

Due to the generosity of many animal lovers, the Wet Nose Animal Rescue Centre is well on its way to recovering after the devastating fire on 17 August that left them with thousands of rand’s worth of damage.

The fire completely annihilated 12ha of grazing land and would have set the non-profit organisation back R3 000 per day to buy the bales of grass, food, concentrate and lucerne for the 35 rescued horses, donkeys and other farm animals.

“I find myself at a loss for words and very emotional. Word cannot describe how blessed we have been and fast the public came to our aid. The only way I can think to describe it, is that the flood gates have opened. We want to thank each and every person who has contributed,” Debbie Herselman, general manager of Wet Nose, said.

She said that a week after the fire they had so many bales of hay and bags of concentrate that they did not know where to store it all. The organisation also received numerous cash donations. She said because Wet Nose staff members are often subjected to the cruelty of man they often lose faith in humanity, but after experiencing such intense love and support from the community, their hope has been restored.

“We now have enough food to see us through and we are very busy re-homing horses and donkeys. We have just employed another fully qualified inspector who is helping us re-home these animals. The best news is that all of the support we have received has enabled us to get through our temporary emergency situation as well as enabled us financially to do more for the horses and donkeys,” a grateful Herselman said.

She said they have recently rescued a large group of emaciated and neglected donkeys and are not concerned about what they are going to feed them. Wet Nose is also starting a new donkey initiative that was made possible by the generous donations they have received.

Herselman also urged all animal lovers to support their Homeless Animals Day on 28 September from 09:00 to 15:00. They have a complete different route planned and a very big surprise that is still kept under wraps and has been especially designed for both young and old.

The Homeless Animals day includes a 1,6km bush dog walk, dog show, rehabilitation awards, flea market, food stalls, beer tent and a big screen TV for the rugby lovers.
