Pretoria is revving up for an epic weekend of extreme sport as the Red bull X-Fighter 2014 World tour comes to the capital city for its final round in South Africa. The event will be happening at the Union Buildings this coming Saturday, 23 August.
One of the competitors is South African freestyle moto-X legend, Nick De Wit. The 33-year-old de Wit soared to stardom after just a few short years in the sport. Almost overnight, “Sick Nick” De Wit became a local hero, consistently back-flipping at comps and shows across the country.
His sudden rise to fame saw all his wildest dreams come true as he left his competition behind and rose to international status. He became the first African to compete in Red Bull X fighters, and has achieved 5th in the World Rankings and 4th in two separate World Cup events. He has mastered his fears, pulling off mind-blowing tricks, and even securing a 4th place in X Games Best Trick in Dubai.
“I’m really excited to bring Red Bull Fighters home in 2014 and have the crowd cheering me on”, said South African freestyle motocross champion Nick de Wit.
De Wit started competing in MX when he was 17 years old, racing regionally and nationally. He won regional colours in 2000. In early 2002, he moved across to FMX where he found his niche. 2002 was the first FMX SA Championship and Nick won. In 2003 he started riding professionally and since then ‘Sick Nick’ has dominated the FMX scene in SA, winning nearly every contest.
In 2004, Nick started competing overseas. He participated in all the 2005 / 2006 Night of the Jumps series in Europe and helped to organise the first Masters of Dirt sessions in South Africa. As part of the FMX4EVER team, de Wit nowadays travels around the globe to inspire for example the public with world-class freestyle motocross.
The world’s best 12 FMX riders will be competing on Saturday right in front of the world famous Union Buildings. Breath-taking tricks and tough battles can be expected heat after heat, as the tour moves to South Africa with a couple of championship contenders battling for the 2014 title.
