The Zumba for charity project of Sutherland High School raised over R7,000 for a school in need.
Held on 22 November, the event, known as a Zumbathon, gave young and old the opportunity to shake their bodies and get fit, while raising money for a worthy cause. On the day, a one hour Zumba dancing session was hosted for the adults, and a 30 minute session for the kids in attendance.
Zumbathons are charitable initiatives that raise funds and awareness for important causes, while simultaneously getting people in shape though Zumba dancing classes.
The aim of the event was to raise money for the Meerhof special needs school in Hartbeespoort, desperately in need of supplies and renovations. On the day, clothes, toys, money and even a microwave were all donated in aid of the school.
“The R7,000 will now be used to paint the physiotherapy department at the school,” said Danilla Colares, one of the organisers of the event and also a Zumba instructor.
She said this was the second event of this kind she had been a part of, adding that a third Zumbathon would be hosted in 2015.
