Local hiphop head Trey Mash’s rhymes for success
Local hiphop artist, Trey Mash has used recent events such as #Feesmustfall to write his own lyrics to inspire the youth.
Hiphop head Trey Mashilo of Sunnyside who recently released his latest album Money over Pane has dreams of starting his own marketing and music companies in future.
The 22-year-old who goes by the name of Trey Mash said he was inspired by local and international hip-hop artists.
“I am inspired by the likes of AKA, Kanye West, Trompies and Ace Hood,” he said.
Trey Mash started rhyming at the age of 15, when only his mother, his friends and classmates believed in his art.
“Now everyone is supportive of what I do, that includes my dad, aunts, cousins and the community,” Trey Mash said.
He describes his genre of hip-hop as music filled with positive messages that inspire other people to believe in themselves.
“The #feesmustfall and racism discussions on social media have given me content that appeals to the youth,” he explained.
Trey Mash said though his favourite hit single Phakamisa (which means to raise your hands in isiZulu), he wanted to encourage young people to stand up for what they believed in.
Trey Mash is a third year in marketing management student at the Vaal University of Technology, and plans to start his own marketing company and record label to assist local artists in future.
Mash who is signed to Pro 91 Media said he also wanted to do his honours degree in logistics with Unisa next year,” he added.
His message to young people is never give up.
“Never give up on your dreams, it might not happen now but it will happen eventually,” he said.
