Mabopane resident creates art through recycling
Mkhulu Petros Mokoena (65) decorates his surroundings with recycled materials to make a living.
Mkhulu Petros Mokoena loves art. His home is full of mosaic designs created by him.
Mokoena (65), from Mabopane Block R, started creating art in 2010 after he resigned as a factory manager, a job he held for 19 years.
“I was diagnosed with diabetes and had to stop working. Since I was not used to being dependent on anyone I started to recycle glass as a form of income,” said Mokoena.
He said recycling glass did not bring in enough money and he started to focus on art.
Mokoena collects and recycles wine bottles, used buckets of achaar, broken flower pots and used polish tins for his art.
The art is then sold to churches and people in his community.
“I decorate other people’s houses and taverns around the community,” he said.
Mokoena dreams of educating children in his neighbourhood about art.
“I want to impart my knowledge to the next generation so that my legacy can continue.”
Mokoena is known as a caregiver and political activist who fights for the rights of the less fortunate.
“He inspires us to work hard and care for others,” said Nelson Marumo, Mokoena’s neighbour and friend.
