Man rescued after driving into river

"When we arrived he was sitting on the roof of his car.”

A man had to be rescued on Saturday morning after he drove into a river near Zwartkop Country Club on the Old Johannesburg Road.

Tshwane Emergency Services spokesman Johan Pieterse said this happened around 05:30.

Pieterse said it was believed the man was under the influence.

“When we arrived he was sitting on the roof of his car. He wasn’t able to get out [of the river].”

“We rescued him and then removed the car from the river.”

Pieterse said the driver had not sustained any injuries, but the vehicle had been damaged.
