Local restores Irene concentration camp cemetery
One initiative that Lucas is looking at will be the setting up of plaques and information boards in a range of languages including Sotho, Afrikaans and Zulu.
The rich and interesting history of the concentration camp cemetery in Irene has inspired a local to do his part to ensure that more people experience the heritage site.
The cemetery is located on Stopford Road inside the Irene security estate.
Leon Lucas hopes that by keeping the cemetery clean and making it more inviting to others, its historical value would be shared with more people.
“I have built benches and members of the community and entrepreneurs have donated several indigenous trees to the site,” said Lucas.
Lucas is also maintaining the grass and gardens and has installed a garbage bin which he says has drastically reduced the amount of litter in the cemetery.

“The public wants to keep the area clean. When you give them a way to do that they will help you to get rid of litter.
“I want people to be able to visit the site and to read and learn about the rich history it presents,” Lucas told Rekord during a visit on Wednesday.
One initiative that Lucas is looking at will be the setting up of plaques and information boards in a range of languages including Sotho, Afrikaans and Zulu.
“We want people to come and learn about the Afrikaner’s struggle against imperialism. I want to share this history with my fellow South Africans,” said Lucas.
Ward councillor Gert Visser said that it was important not only for the community to do their part but also individuals.
“When individuals do their part to take care of their heritage and to clean up their environment then we can accomplish so much more,” said Visser.
Visser also expressed his gratitude to Lucas and said it was good that the information boards which will be installed would convey the history of the site in a range of languages.
