VIDEO: West dumpsite employees turn disposal site into veggie garden

"We use the vegetables to provide a nice plate of food for our family."

Two residents from the west of Pretoria took matters into their own hands to “brighten up” a dump site.

John Matshwi and Caipus Kgomo, two workers at the Danville garbage disposal site, started a vegetable garden on the premises.

At the site, Matshwi and Kgomo work hard every day to maintain their garden, with a large variety of vegetables.

Kgomo told Rekord on Wednesday that he started the garden in 2016 after he noticed the landfill was not being maintained.

“The grass grown tall (sic) and it just looked bad,” he says.

Matshwi says that he was transferred to the Danville garden waste landfill site from Rooihuiskraal later that year.

“When I started working here, Caipus already started a small garden,” he said.

“We started working together and what is here today was the end product.”

He said they grew vegetables like spinach, onions, avocado trees and maize in their garden.

Kgomo said they did not generate an extra income from their garden.

“We use the vegetables to provide a nice plate of food for our family,” he says.

Matshwi said he enjoyed working in the garden.

“In comparison to Rooihuiskraal’s landfill, Danville was very untidy,” he said.

“When I saw the garden Kgomo started, I could not help but join him – I do it with a smile on my face.”

A resident who regularly visited the landfill, Johan Cloete said regular visitors recognised the friendly faces of Matshwi and Kgomo all too well.

“When I saw what they were doing, I immediately went to see,” he said.

“They are an example to others and I feel more dumping sites should implement such initiatives.”

He says they are a good example for others.
