Lives of children changed at Mandela Day event

The children got to interact with Blue Bulls players and Miss South Africa contestants.

The lives of more than 220 school children were changed during the 67 minutes for Mandela campaign at Loftus Versveld on Thursday.

This after the LFP Group, Blue Bulls players, the Dreamwalkers organisation, Carte Blanche and the Miss South Africa contestants spent the day with the children from the various schools.

Francois Pulzone, divisional manager for strategic partnerships and sponsorships for LFP, said charity work and education were near to the group’s heart.

He said LFP stood for leadership, focus and passion; adding that their passion for people led them to put together the event.

Pulzone said they dedicated their passion to children and other organisations.

“We wanted to have an impact on children’s lives,” he said.

Pulzone said the event was not something they had been planning specifically for Mandela Day; and that in future, they planned on hosting more such events.

He said they spent R600 000 on sponsorship to schools and other organisations to carry out their good work.

He said the schools could use the donated money as they pleased, as he knew they would use the funds correctly.

“The schools will know what they need, be it special programmes, the students or feeding the children.”

The children got to interact with Blue Bulls players, the Miss South Africa contestants as well as play on slides.

A social worker for Pretoria School for CP Learners, Refilwe Maakamedi, said the children enjoyed the activities.

“Today was a treat for the children, especially as we are a special needs school.

“It means a lot for us workers who work with the children, especially being their second form of parents and seeing them not have fun back at home.”

She said today made a difference in their lives and Mandela would be proud seeing children smiling and laughing about.

“We hope that going forward we have more of these days and not just on Mandela Day, as we as a society cannot neglect children.”
